A man has been arrested after a woman in her 60s died in a crash on the M40 motorway near Lapworth.

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway between junction 15 and 16 before 23:00 BST on Sunday.

Warwickshire Police have arrested a 54-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and he remains in custody.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said paramedics were unable to help the woman, who was confirmed dead at the scene of the three-car crash, while a man was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The southbound carriageway and two lanes of the northbound carriageway between junction 15 and 16 remained shut for much of Monday as investigation works took place, said National Highways.

Two other men were assessed for minor injuries and discharged from medical care, the ambulance service added.

Police have asked any witnesses to the crash to get in touch.
