New bus services have been introduced in south Cumbria for the summer holidays

Increased bus frequencies are set to be introduced ahead of the summer holidays to help link up attractions.

Extra services are being laid on in parts of Cumbria from 19 July on the 563 between Penrith and Kirkby Stephen and the 534 from Grange-over-Sands to Windermere.

The former will run three Sunday services for the first time in years, while the latter is a new Monday to Saturday service, also running three times a day.

Westmorland and Furness Council, which worked with operator Stagecoach to introduce the changes, said the services were aimed at "improving access to cultural, leisure and heritage attractions" for residents and visitors.

Councillor Adrian Waite, transport cabinet member at the LibDem authority, said: "They enable people who live in rural areas to access urban services, they enable sustainable tourism and they enable people to access attractive and sustainable town centres without the use of a car."

The 563, which runs through Temple Sowerby, Kirkby Thore, Appleby, Warcop and Brough, will run at least until November, the council said.

The 534 will operate during the school holidays only and take passengers to Haven Leisure Park, Haverthwaite, Backbarrow and Bowness Pier.

In July and August, the 517 weekend shuttle to Little Langdale from Ambleside will operate on weekends and bank holidays.
