Factory closure could see more than 200 jobs lost
GoogleA textiles factory employing 215 people is to close, it has announced.
Lenzing, in Grimsby, said the closure was part of a "strategic transformation" across the company, which has sites across the world.
The North East Lincolnshire site, on Energy Park Way, manufactures Tencel - the brand name for lyocell fibres.
Matthia Maletzky, from the company, said: "Currently, around 215 people work at the Grimsby site. Lenzing plans to phase-out production by the end of 2027."
He said the firm would "engage with employee representatives and relevant stakeholders regarding appropriate support and mitigation measures" for those affected by the closure.
Lenzing has been running the site since May 2004.
The company said its new strategy was "designed to improve competitiveness, profitability and return on invested capital".
The Unite union, which represents workers at the plant, described the move as "devastating" and said it would be "offering maximum support" to its members.
Regional officer Mick Simpson said: "We will be scrutinising Lenzing Fibres' plans and demanding that all options are properly considered.
"Lenzing Fibres can be certain that Unite will be unrelenting in making sure the best interests of our members are represented as we enter consultations."
