An agency worker who attempted to rape an elderly care home resident has been jailed for nine years.

Malek Alshabi, 53, of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, attacked the woman at a care home in North Lincolnshire in March while working as an outsourced carer.

Humberside Police said the alarm was raised by a third-party company, which alerted the care home after motion was detected which would normally indicate a concern for safety incident such as a fall.

Alshabi identifies as Yemeni, the force said, and was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court on Thursday after admitting a charge of attempted rape.

He was told he would be required to spend a further three years on extended licence after release, with Alshabi also given a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.

'Appalling breach of trust'

He was arrested at the care home, with Alshabi denying all allegations later put to him during a police interview.

Det Con Jasmine Morley, from Humberside Police's protecting vulnerable people unit, described it as a "deeply distressing" case.

"First and foremost, our thoughts remain with the woman and her family who have been affected by this appalling breach of trust," said Morley.

"Those in care are among the most vulnerable members of our community and have the right to feel safe, respected and protected.

"Alshabi broke this duty of care in the most unimaginable way."

She urged anyone who had been the victim of a sexual offence to come forward and report it to police.

"All reports are thoroughly investigated and we have specially trained officers and independent support agencies who will support you every step of the way," she added.
