Investigation launched into illegal waste site
DEFRA/SuppliedAn investigation has been launched after "several thousand" tonnes of household and commercial waste were discovered at an illegal site in Bradford.
Reports were received on Wednesday about the dump on land at Midland Road, the Environment Agency (EA) said.
The EA is working with Bradford Council, West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to identify those responsible for the unauthorised tip.
Anyone who may have seen anything or has information to help the investigation is urged to get in touch.
Area manager Ben Hocking said: "We have launched an investigation to find those responsible for illegal waste dumping in central Bradford so they can be held to account.
"We are assessing the site's environmental impact and making inquiries to trace the landowner to ensure the site is secured."
Waste crime costs the UK more than £1bn every year, according to the EA.
The agency reminded the public that they should only pay a registered waste disposal contractor to take household rubbish away, and that landowners should regularly check empty sites for signs of illegal use.
