A man who shot at a rival during an altercation in a Derby street has been jailed.

William Lyon, of Cloudberry Close, Derby, fired a gun in Cowsley Road in Chaddesden on 16 July 2025, missing his target and lodging a bullet in the engine of a parked car.

He had been due to stand trial at Derby Crown Court in February charged with attempted murder but on the first day of the trial he pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, affray and criminal damage.

The 21-year-old was jailed for 13 years at the same court on Monday.

A police van is parked in a residential street with police cordon tape blocking the road. Houses and bins are pictured on either side of the road.

Police said two groups had started fighting just before 12:40 BST, but then left the area.

But a number of them returned just under an hour later, during which Lyon fired a shot, the force said.

Det Con Laura McCormack, who led the investigation, said it was "only by sheer luck" that nobody was injured in what was a "distressing" incident for residents.

She said: "There is no place for behaviour like this in Derbyshire."
