Vehicles seized by police have been put to good use to help student mechanics get some hands-on practice.

Cumbria Police donated six vehicles to Carlisle College and has pledged a further six to students at Furness College in Barrow.

The force said about 100 students had been able to work on the vehicles to help them build their skills and confidence.

Jack Stabler of the police roads policing unit said: "It was great to see the students' work first-hand, gaining practical experience of working on cars."

Funding from the county's fire and crime commissioner, David Allen, paid for the transport of the vehicles to the college.

"This is helping the next generation of mechanics and vehicle technicians learn on the job and in the process saving the college a lot of money," he said.
