Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was badly injured during an alleged domestic attack.

The woman remains in a serious condition in hospital after suffering multiple wounds near Regina Road, Chelmsford, at about 16:30 BST on Saturday.

Essex Police said the man, 54, was arrested during searches of the area and, after hospital treatment, was taken into custody.

Det Insp Luke Howard added: "Whilst this serious incident is less than 24 hours old, we know it involved people known to each other and there was no threat to the wider public."

Specialist officers are supporting the victim's family while she is in hospital.

Howard, who is leading the investigation, thanked people who provided witness accounts of the incident.
