The catch-up clinic takes place on Saturday

Children and young people who have missed school-age vaccinations are being urged to get catch-up jabs at a special clinic on Saturday.

The session will be held at Whitmore Reans Family Hub in Wolverhampton between 09:00 and 13:00 BST.

It is aimed at those who were away from school on injection days, or are being home educated.

City of Wolverhampton Council's cabinet member for health, Obaida Ahmed, said: "These vaccines offer the best protection for teenagers as they start their journey into adulthood and start mixing more widely."

What vaccinations are on offer?

The session on Saturday will offer four vaccinations commonly offered in schools:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio (DTP): Also known as the three-in-one teenage booster for children in year 9 and above. This booster is the last routine dose that provides young people with long lasting protection into adulthood.
  • Meningococcal (Men ACWY): For children in Year 9 and above, helping protect young people against 3 types of meningococcal disease which can cause both meningitis and septicaemia.
  • HPV vaccine: For children in year 8, helping to protect against cancers caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • MMR: For children in year 1 and above, which providing long-lasting protection against measles, mumps and rubella.

Can you just turn up?

No. Appointments for the session must be booked in advance.

This can be done by calling Vaccination UK in the city on 01902 200077.

Why does it matter?

There has been concern in recent years that vaccination rates for some conditions are falling.

This reduces population-level immunity, allowing outbreaks to take hold.

Measles is one illness which has caused particular concern in the past few years, with two children dying this year in the West Midlands and London.
