A child has been rescued from a river in Shropshire, following reports of someone entering the water from a boat.

Bridgnorth Police said emergency services were called to a stretch of the River Severn near - but not connected to - the Knowle Sands Caravan Park, earlier on Sunday.

"Thanks to the quick and decisive actions of family members and members of the public, the child was safely rescued on the arrival of emergency services," it said.

The force said it would like to thank those involved for their "swift intervention" but issued a reminder to the public to take care around open water during warmer weather.

The child was wearing a life preserver, which can reduce risk, it said, but "significant dangers still remain".

"We would also like to acknowledge the rapid response of our Officers, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, West Midlands Ambulance Service and Midlands Air Ambulance," it added.
