A number of crews tackled the blaze on Great Hampton Street in Birmingham

Plumes of thick smoke could be seen above Birmingham city centre after a blaze broke out and forced roads to be shut.

A number of crews were called to a blaze on Great Hampton Street, near the city's Jewellery Quarter, at about 11:00 BST, West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) said.

Firefighters used hose reel jets, a hydraulic platform and a drone to tackle the blaze, thought to have started accidentally before it was brought under control.

Great Hampton Street and Constitution Hill, between Northwood Street and Halford Street, have been reopened, but Barr Street remained closed on Friday afternoon, WMFS said.

Two fire engines parked at a road junction on opposite sides of the road. A red and white cordon is placed in front of the junction. Several firefighters and a police woman are standing next to the fire engines.
WMFS said the cause of the fire was accidental.
