A crackdown on "unsafe" parking during school drop-off and pick-up times is designed to keep children safe as the nights draw in, police have said.

The Isle of Man Constabulary said officers would be carrying out "educational and proactive parking enforcement" to tackle irresponsible, inconsiderate and dangerous parking.

A force spokeswoman said: "Whilst you may want to keep your child safe getting into school, often where you choose to park or drop off causes danger for other children and road users.

"Taking a little more time and care helps keep our island and our children safe."

Motorists have also been reminded that the 20mph (32km/h) speed limit outside all the island's schools is "mandatory and enforceable" during drop-off and pick-up times.

"Please do not put a child in danger by rushing to get yours to school or yourself to work," said the police spokeswoman.

She urged drivers to avoid parking on zig-zag lines, in school entrances, or on pavements - something which could force children, those with pushchairs or wheelchair users to "step into the road".

The force spokeswoman said drivers should also always follow school crossing patrol officers's instructions, and never let children get out of their car directly onto the road.

And she advised parents to "make sure children can be seen when walking to and from school or getting on and off the bus".
