A six-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries when the car he was travelling in hit a parked van, police have said.

Officers were called to Poplar Road in Skellow following reports of a crash involving a white Volkswagen Golf and a stationary Citroen Relay van in nearby Lodge Road, at about 16:55 BST on Thursday.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said the boy, who was a passenger in the Golf, had been taken to hospital, where he remains with "serious, life-threatening injuries".

The force said a 52-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and further driving offences in connection with the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant footage of what happened is asked to contact police.
