Three months of roadworks are due to start, linking Bradford's city centre cycleway to an existing route.

A wide pavement and an unused bus layby on Leeds Road next to the Little Germany area will be used to create the connection to the cycleway near the junction of Leeds Road and the A650 Shipley Airedale Road.

Access for businesses will be maintained at all times, according to the council, with mostly day-time work plus a one-off night shift for resurfacing on East Parade.

Construction is due to start on Monday and is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Councillor Alex Ross Saw, Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: "This work will see the connection of this final section of cycleway.

"The scheme has been designed to take cyclists off the main carriageway, making it safer and easier for cyclists.

"This also has benefits for drivers in helping the flow of traffic."

The scheme is being funded by the Community Infrastructure Levy and Active Travel England Fund via the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Both pots of funding have been ring-fenced so can only be spent on this type of project, according to the council.

It would not be able to spend any of the funding on day-to-day council services, like bin collections or social care, a spokesperson added.

The cycle lanes were part of a major £43m transport scheme which included the pedestrianisation of much of the city centre.
