An 18-year-old man has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a car crashed into cows that were loose on a road in West Dunbartonshire.

He was a passenger in a blue 1980s BMW 635CS which hit the animals on the A811, near Old School Road in Gartocharn, at about 23:50 on Sunday.

Police said two cows died at the scene and three more had to be euthanised. There were no other reports of serious injuries.

The 22-year-old male driver was arrested over a road traffic offence and released pending further inquiries.

Sgt Kenny Malaney said: "Our inquiries to establish the full circumstances of this crash are ongoing and I am appealing to anyone who has any information that could assist our investigation to contact us.

"I would ask anyone who saw the car prior to the crash, or who was driving in the area around the time and may have dash cam footage, to get in touch."
