Fire crews are battling a blaze in approximately 100 tonnes of household waste.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said its crews were called to Compton Bassett, near Calne in Wiltshire, at 16:58 DST.

Residents living nearby have been urged to keep their doors and windows shut after the fire, which broke out at the waste transfer station north of the household recycling centre.

The fire service said there are about 10 engines at the site, including multiple pumps and two water carriers.

"We are dealing with a fire at a recycling site in Compton Bassett which is creating a smoke plume," it said in a statement.

"Affected local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed until the smoke has cleared."
