Homes around Dale Street in Ulverston have been evacuated, Cumbria Police said

A man who was reported to be in a "distressed state" has handed himself in to police after an overnight standoff with armed officers.

Properties close to the house on Dale Street in Ulverston, Cumbria, were evacuated and officers, who had been at the scene since shortly after 19:30 BST on Thursday, feared a firearm could be involved.

The man was still inside the house on Friday morning and Cumbria Police said in a statement that "a substance, believed to be noxious, is also being intermittently released from inside the address".

The man was placed into in custody for a public order offence at about 10:35 and residents will be allowed to return to their homes after final safety checks.

The man was found to have "minor injuries to his hands and arms", police said.

A BB gun has been found at the scene and police said the "noxious substance" was gas but gave no further details.

Ch Supt David Pattinson previously said everyone who had been affected by the evacuation found accommodation with families and friends or in nearby facilities.
