Man jailed for life for attack outside takeaway

A man who stabbed an acquaintance in the neck outside a takeaway in a "violent and unprovoked" attack has been jailed for life.

Asad Abbas, 41, admitted attacking his 52-year-old victim on Crag Street in Shipley, West Yorkshire, on 18 September last year.

West Yorkshire Police said Abbas punched then stabbed the other man, leaving him with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Abbas, of Leeds Road, Shipley, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court to life imprisonment with a minimum term of five years and one month, minus the 303 days he had spent on remand.

He was told he will only be released when the parole board is satisfied he is no longer a danger to the public.

Det Con Arman Hussain of Bradford CID said: "Abbas's offending was violent and unprovoked. He used a weapon which caused a stab wound to the victim's neck.

"The victim was very lucky he wasn't more seriously hurt.

"Violence on our streets is never the answer.

"I hope this sentence shows how seriously we take assaults of this nature."
