A teenager who became trapped on a steep cliff after trying to escape a rising tide has been rescued by helicopter.

Coastguard rescue teams and a lifeboat crew were sent to the cliffs in the Luccombe area between Shanklin and Ventnor on the Isle of Wight at about 20:00 BST on Thursday.

Bembridge RNLI said he became stuck after climbing about 200m (656ft) up the cliff. Coastguard rescue climbers could not reach him, so he was winched to safety by a coastguard helicopter.

After he was lifted to the top off the cliff he was checked over and left in the care of a family member.
