A mere 88 years after it opened, a primary school is about to start building an onsite kitchen to provide meals for pupils.

Holywell Village First School in Northumberland opened in 1938 but has never had a kitchen, instead ordering food deliveries from council or corporate catering schemes.

But the school has added £13,000 from its own budget to £76,000 from Northumberland County Council in order to start work on the new facility this summer.

Headteacher Sarah Brett said: "Having our own kitchen facilities will be more cost-effective and will futureproof the delivery of hot and nutritious meals which are so important to the health and wellbeing of our pupils."

Building work is expected to continue into the next academic year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Holywell county councillor Lee Bowman said: "This is great news for the school and will be a real boost for all the pupils."

Cabinet member for education Guy Renner-Thompson said: "They didn't have their own kitchen and it was costing the school an awful lot of money using outside caterers.

"Holywell school is doing really well and this is further investment into the school to keep it going long into the future."
