More than a 100 paddleboarders celebrated the summer solstice on a beach in Kent.

The paddleboarders met at Joss Bay in Broadstairs to mark the official start of the astronomical summer across the northern hemisphere.

The sun rose on the longest day of the year at about 04:40 BST and is expected to set at about 21:20.

Jay Manning, who camped overnight at Joss Bay to catch the sunrise, said: "When winter comes we remember these summer moments.

"We just enjoy the ocean as much as possible and sunrise gives you a feeling of energy. It's a celebration of summer."

Andy Webb, from Kent Surf School, said: "Summer solstice is a very tranquil, very peaceful and a great start to summer.

"And paddleboarding is very sociable. It's not a competition to get to the sun."

Other events across the country included solstice swims and the annual gathering at Stonehenge, which saw thousands of people enjoy the sunrise in Wiltshire.

Lottie Rayfield said she loved "the sense of community" at the Broadstairs event.

Tom Rayfield added: "Summer solstice, it's an amazing thing, all this natural beauty.

"It's worth making the effort to come out and be with people."
