There have been ongoing complaints about a smell on Bourges Boulevard in Peterborough

Efforts to identify and eliminate the cause of a bad smell in Peterborough will see part of a main road shut this month.

Anglian Water engineers are due to carry out "tankering" - a process using heavy-duty vacuum tankers to collect liquid waste - as they try to solve the problem along Bourges Boulevard.

The southbound stretch between the Crescent Bridge roundabout and Rivergate is due to close overnight for up to five days from Tuesday.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: "Our team is carrying out investigations on our nearby sites and assets to find a solution for this odour."

It follows an announcement by the company in April that it would fit specialist smell-trapping covers to drains near the Park Inn, in a bid to counter the worst effects of the pong.

As previously reported by the Peterborough Telegraph, the odour has become a persistent problem in the area, especially during prolonged spells of hot or wet weather.
