Lawrence Worville, described by police as "cruel and calculating", was found guilty of attempted murder by a jury at Hull Crown Court

A man has been found guilty of attempted murder after he drove his car into a woman and then attacked her with a baseball bat.

Lawrence Worville's car mounted the pavement and hit the woman outside a shop on Chanterlands Avenue in Hull in May 2025. He then got out of the car and beat her with the weapon.

He was overpowered by a number of passersby who detained him until police arrived. The woman suffered head and leg injuries, as well as a broken finger.

Worville, 51, of Spring Bank West in Hull, denied the charge, but was convicted on Wednesday following a three-day trial at Hull Crown Court.

Humberside Police said Worville, who knew the victim, had broken into a business premises to try and find documents that would reveal where she lived.

Det Insp Helen Collier said that Worville had an "obsession" with the woman.

"Worville is a cruel and calculating man who set out that day armed with two weapons – his car and a baseball bat - to cause fear, alarm, and attempt to kill an innocent woman he knew," she said.

She added: "Worville is a dangerous, conniving individual who subjected a woman to an unimaginable attack which left her spending 10 days in hospital.

"I would like to thank the members of the public who came to the woman's aid that day and heroically intervened, restraining Worville until police arrived at the scene to arrest him, despite being threatened by Worville wielding a bat themselves."
