Three arrested after man shot near city venue

Three people have been arrested after a man was shot in Birmingham following disorder near an events venue.

Police said they were called shortly before 23:20 BST on Sunday to an area outside Luna Springs on Lower Trinity Street, Digbeth, following reports of a gun being fired.

A man aged 23 suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and remains under arrest in hospital, suspected of violent disorder. Two others, aged 20 and 30, have also been detained.

In a statement, the venue said: "Last night's incident did not take place inside Luna Springs and was not connected to the venue... No firearm entered Luna Springs and nobody inside the venue was involved or injured."

Det Insp Stacey Follows, from West Midlands Police Major Crime Unit, said: "It's believed the disorder started inside the venue and then spilled out on to the street, where the shooting happened."

Police remain at the scene to gather evidence, review CCTV footage and speak to witnesses.

Follows said: "We're in the very early stages of the investigation, but have made good progress already."

There were a lot of people present at the venue at the time, according to police.

"I need anyone who saw what happened or who has recorded or been sent any mobile phone footage to get in touch as soon as possible," Fellows added.

A dedicated web page has been set up by police for people to send information, pictures and videos directly.

The shooting follows an incident in May in which two people were stabbed at the venue, leading to its licence being suspended.

The suspension was imposed by Birmingham City Council after an application from West Midlands Police.

After resuming trading, the venue posted a statement online saying it had worked with the authorities to assist an investigation and "to ensure that all aspects of safety are in place for all of our events".

Luna Springs said of the latest incident: "We are assisting the police fully, including providing CCTV footage and any other information that may help their investigation.

"The safety of our customers and teams is our single most important priority. We take security extremely seriously, work closely with the police and licensing authorities.

"It is deeply upsetting to hear of another incident involving a firearm on our streets, and we are very grateful that nobody was seriously injured."
