A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a fire and gas leak in a Lanarkshire village.

Several homes in Chryston were evacuated and a property was cordoned off after the incident on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters had been called to reports of bins on fire. It forced the closure of the A80 road at its junction with Cumbernauld Road and Knowe Road.

Police Scotland thanked residents for their "patience" while officers attended. The man is expected to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Thursday.
