Mountain dogs rescued after getting stuck on rocks

A couple and their two Bernese mountain dogs were rescued from an area of unstable boulders in a national park.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) said it had received a report from Cumbria Police about a couple stuck at Wastwater Screes, an area of boulders on the bank of Wastwater, in the Lake District, on Monday evening.

The pair had become stuck with their dogs Hugo and Elsie, according to WMRT. It deployed a boat across the lake to rescue the group.

"Hugo and Elsie were over the moon about their unexpected boat trip, enjoying biscuits and giving the crew plenty of encouragement with enthusiastic woofs," a spokesperson said.

"They were safely transported - along with their owners - to the opposite shore so they could return to their car without any more ruff terrain to negotiate.

"A wholesome rescue all round, with two happy Bernese mountain dogs enjoying a surprise cruise on Wastwater and proving once again that even the best adventure dogs sometimes need a little help from their friends."

The rescue, which was launched at about 19:20 BST, required six volunteer team members and took just over two hours and 30 minutes.
