A young girl was freed after a three-hour rescue when she became trapped beneath rocks at a popular Dartmoor beauty spot.

Emergency crews were called to Hound Tor on Tuesday afternoon after reports a child had become stuck under the rocks.

Firefighters from Bovey Tracey said they arrived to find the girl's leg wedged between stones after she slipped while climbing down through a narrow tunnel.

She was eventually freed with only minor bumps and scratches and was checked over by ambulance crews at the scene.

Crews said they stabilised and reassured the girl while waiting for specialist help. They worked alongside Dartmoor Search and Rescue, paramedics, a hazardous area response team, cave rescue specialists and the Devon Air Ambulance in what they described as a delicate operation.

The child remained trapped for more than three hours as teams battled hot and difficult conditions, they said.

Firefighters thanked everyone involved in the rescue.
