Ex-primary teacher admits sexual assault of boys

A former primary school teacher has admitted sexually assaulting and falsely imprisoning two nine-year-old boys.

Joseph Haffenden, formerly of High Street in Lindfield, pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual assault by touching and six counts of false imprisonment of the boys, which took place in January and February 2026.

Searches of his home uncovered items "suggesting an interest in children" after the children reported that he tickled them under their clothing with his hands, a feather, and an electric toothbrush in what he called a "game", Sussex Police said.

Haffenden, 32, who was suspended from his job and later dismissed, has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced in September.

Sussex Police Det Sgt Ellen Jones said: "I am grateful for both young victims in this investigation for reporting Haffenden's disturbing crimes and bringing him to our attention.

"We were able to act swiftly and bring him into custody, while working with our partners and the school to ensure there were no wider safeguarding risks."
