Teens arrested after crash injures police officer

The injured Durham police officer has since been discharged from hospital

Six teenagers have been arrested over a crash involving a suspected stolen can and which left a police officer injured.

Just before 06:45 BST, a car was reported as having been stolen from Burdon, south of Sunderland, Northumbria Police said.

It was then driven into the Durham Constabulary area before being found just after 08:30 BST parked on Cooperative Terrace in Sunderland. When police approached the car, the vehicle was driven away and crashed into a stationary vehicle, injuring the Durham officer.

Half a dozen boys, aged between 13 and 17 were arrested and remain in custody. The officer was taken to hospital for treatment but has since been discharged.

Cooperative Terrace was closed to traffic and officers were expected to remain at the scene for a number of hours, Northumbria Police said.

Det Ch Insp Rebecca Fenney said: "Police officers attend work with the sole intention to help people - not to be hurt in the line of duty.

"We wish this officer a speedy recovery and we'd like to thank him and his colleagues for their assistance with the response to the initial report."
