Plan to create new parish and town councils approved
Charnwood Borough CouncilPlans to create a town council for Loughborough and a parish council for a new village north of Leicester have been given the go-ahead.
Charnwood Borough Council approved proposals to establish the town council and a parish council for Broadnook on Monday, following two rounds of consultations.
This comes as the borough council itself is set to be dissolved as part of a government-ordered major shake-up of local government in Leicestershire.
Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Jewel Miah, said: "I am pleased councillors have backed the creation of the new councils which will help strengthen the voice of local communities."
Council documents state a budget of £50,000 has been allocated by the authority to include the costs of undertaking the consultation, legal advice and costs of an Association of Electoral Administrators consultant.
Davidsons/CoraIt said a town council for Loughborough would have 25 councillors while Broadnook Village Council would have 12 councillors.
The borough council added the creation of the parish council meant the boundaries for the parishes of Rothley, Wanlip, and Thurcaston and Cropston would be changed.
Broadnook garden village - which will comprise more than 2,000 homes when completed - is currently being created on land north of Leicester, between Birstall and Rothley.
According to Charnwood Borough Council, town and parish councils can provide a variety of services, such as allotments, parks, community centres, litter bins, street lighting and celebrations.
Charnwood Borough Council said the town and parish councils would come into effect on 1 April 2027 with elections due in May that year.
