Steve Hubbard/BBCA 16-year-old boy who died from stab wounds was the victim of "a targeted attack", police have said.
Officers were called to Adnitt Road, in the Abington area of Northampton, shortly after 19:00 BST on Tuesday where they found the victim.
Ch Insp Nicola Davis-Lyons said: "Despite the best efforts of members of the public, police and paramedics, he died at the scene."
A murder inquiry has been launched and she appealed for anyone with information to come forward, adding "what you know could be the missing piece of the puzzle".
Steve Hubbard/BBCThe name of the boy who died in the attack has not yet been made public.
A police cordon remains in place at Adnitt Road and another one has been set up more than two miles (3.2km) away in Dallington Park.
Davis-Lyons said the second cordon was in place as it was where detectives believed the suspects had fled.
She said it was now an "exceptionally fast-paced investigation".
"We do believe that this is a targeted attack and there is no wider risk to members of the public, but an increased police presence and high visibility patrols will remain in the area to offer reassurance and support to our local community."
She also offered her condolences to the boy's friends and family.
"They are understandably devastated and specialist officers are supporting them at this time, she said.
"Our focus now is to get them justice for what has happened."
