Police have launched an appeal after a girl was attacked in Springburn Park

Detectives have issued a description of a man suspected of raping a 16-year-old girl in a Glasgow park.

Officers said the teenager was pushed into bushes and attacked while walking near the Moongate, in Springburn Park, between 20:30 and 21:15 on Friday.

The suspect is described as being in his 30s, possibly European, with a tanned complexion and of average height and build.

He was said to be wearing a black baseball cap, black lightweight jacket and black trousers.

Police Scotland said the man fled the area after the attack and "extensive" inquiries to trace him were ongoing.

Det Insp Sharon McPeake described the incident as an "extremely shocking attack".

She said the girl was receiving support from specialist officers.

Det Insp McPeake added police were working to establish what direction the man ran in following the attack.

She asked for anyone with private CCTV or dash cam footage from the area at the time of the incident to come forward and share it with officers.

Ch Insp Mhairi Crawford, Glasgow local area commander, said an "increased police presence" would be in the area for a period.

She said: "We understand this is a concerning incident for the local community.

"Officers will be carrying out dedicated pro-active patrols and will look to engage with park visitors, local groups and residents.

"Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to these officers."
