Crash arrest after woman suffers life-changing injuries

A man has been arrested after a woman suffered potentially life-changing injuries when she was hit by a van after it mounted the pavement.

The woman and a man were struck by a white Mercedes Vito outside a shop in East Street, Rye, at about 13:30 BST on Friday, said Sussex Police. Both were taken to hospital.

The van driver, a 37-year-old man from Willesborough, Kent, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail.

PC Sam Bourne said: "The area was very busy at the time of the collision and we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed it."

The road was closed with the junction of High Street while emergency services worked to treat the casualties, investigate the collision and recover the vehicle, said police.

A shopfront was also damaged in the crash.
