A woman says she is "heartbroken" after her cat was "brutally killed" by two dogs on leads on a street near her home.

Nicole, from Calne in Wiltshire, said the seven-year-old family pet named Baby was under a car sleeping when she was attacked.

She thanked staff at Calne Family Health Centre for taking Baby to the vet and giving "her comfort in her last moments". Baby was "the most patient, loving little cat", she added.

Wiltshire Police said it had received a report of a "suspected dog attack on a cat in Calne" at 13:30 BST on 30 June. Inquiries are ongoing.

Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, it is an offence to be in charge of any dog that is dangerously out of control.

Dog attacks on other animals may amount to an offence under the act and it is for the police and Crown Prosecution Service to consider what action is appropriate in individual cases.

Nicole said Baby was "known very well to the area – everyone told me how lovely she was".

She continued: "I was 17 when I got her. I was going through such a terrible time in life and she was such a little darling.

"It truly has devastated us to not only have lost her but in such a senseless, avoidable attack.

"It's truly heartbreaking. She was very brutally killed."

Wiltshire Police asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which oversees the Dangerous Dogs Act, said: "We recognise attacks on pets can have a devastating impact on owners and we take these incidents seriously.

"We continue to work with the police, local authorities and animal welfare groups to encourage responsible dog ownership across all breeds and ensure the current dog control rules are sufficient to protect communities."
