Plans for new roundabout at A9 junction with a 'history of accidents'

Highland Council has submitted plans for a roundabout to replace a junction with a "history of accidents" on the A9 in Easter Ross

The four-arm roundabout has been proposed at the site of the Tomich junction, near Invergordon.

Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport (ICFGF) would fund the project using some of the support it has received from the UK government.

Accidents at the junction have included an incident in January last year which saw two people seriously injured, which was followed just weeks later by a two-vehicle collision.

In a design statement, Highland Council said the new roundabout was necessary to support increased traffic created by the green freeport.

The port, set up to support marine renewable energy developments, involves a number of locations in Easter Ross.

The council added: "Road safety concerns have been expressed about the existing junction layout, highlighting issues such as turning conflicts, and a history of accidents.

"A new roundabout would provide a safer, more controlled means of managing traffic flow, reducing collision risks while ensuring the infrastructure is fit for purpose in supporting economic growth."
