Tributes to 'selfless' family killed in crash

The deaths of four members of the same family, including an 11-month-old baby, following a crash has been described as a "devastating tragedy".

Abubacarr Camara, 36, Isa Jaiteh, 30, their infant daughter Aisha Camara and an 18-year-old woman, believed to be a cousin, died when the red Hyundai they were travelling in struck trees at the side of the A38 in Derby at about 23:00 BST on Saturday.

Community tributes to the family, who were part of Leeds's Gambian diaspora, spoke of their kindness and humility.

Derbyshire Police said the driver, a 33-year-old man, suffered serious injuries. He was initially arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but later bailed.

It is believed the family were on their way back north, after enjoying an event for people from the west African country's Sarahule community in Birmingham earlier in the day.

The Gambia Welfare Society Leeds asked people to "give their families strength and patience during this heartbreaking time".

Abubacarr, also known as Buba, was described as a "dedicated servant" to the local community who mentored children through football.

"He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service", the society added.

The three adults were all pronounced dead at the scene while the baby was taken to hospital but died a short time later, police said.

'Respected youth leader'

Another member of the Gambian community said Abubacarr was a "respected youth leader" whose life was defined by faith, honesty, humility and "selfless service".

"He dedicated himself to uplifting young people, strengthening community ties and promoting unity among all," they added.

A police spokesperson said: "The relatives of those involved are aware and are receiving support from specialist officers.

"Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage was urged to contact the force.
