By-election called after Green councillor resigns
Charnwood Borough CouncilA by-election is to be held after a Green Party councillor resigned from Charnwood Borough Council.
Laurie Needham, the leader of the Green group on the authority, said she was stepping down as the member for the Wreake Valley ward as a result of "ongoing health issues".
The council said a by-election to choose her successor would take place on Thursday 17 September.
In a statement, released by the Green Party, Needham said her decision to resign had been "incredibly tough".
She won the seat, which includes areas such as Queniborough, East Goscote and Thrussington, in 2023 when Labour took control of the authority as a minority administration with the support of Green councillors.
Labour currently holds 20 of the council's 54 seats and there are seven Green members.
The Conservatives are the largest single party and hold 22 seats, while there are two independent councillors.
Anyone wishing to stand in the by-election has until Thursday 20 August to submit their nomination.
