Stone skimmer aims for world title
BBCThe Stone Skimming World Championships take place in September and Gordon Couling from Romsey is hoping to win.
Gordon, 70, takes part in the over-60s category, known as "Old Tossers". Last year he skimmed a stone for 57 metres, taking second place.
Flat stones are thrown so that they skip and bounce across the water. A stone must skip at least three times to qualify for measurement.
"It's just massive fun. You get three stones and you have to stand on a big stone to throw from. The back of the course is 63 metres away, so I nearly made it", Couling explained.
The championships are held on the Scottish island of Easdale and the trip doubles as a holiday for Gordon and his wife, Vicky, who live in Romsey.
"People come from all over the world. They're really competitive. People practice for hours and think about things like aerodynamics," explained Mrs Couling.
"Between you and me, I actually quite fancy being married to a champion old tosser rather than just a runner up."
"The pressure's on now", replied Mr Couling.
