A slipway has been closed after being found seriously damaged.

Large cracks can be seen running across Seaview slipway in pictures posted by Isle of Wight Council.

The authority said it was investigating the cause of the failure in the coastal defence wall.

It said it had shut the top of the slipway in Pier Road "for the foreseeable future" and was urging boat users to stay away from the bottom end.

Environment director Natasha Dix said: "Public safety is our absolute priority.

"We'll continue to monitor conditions at low tide and will update the community as soon as we have a safe way forward."

The council urged residents to take care near the coast following recent tidal surges and persistent wet weather.
