A planning application to demolish empty buildings on the Leale's Yard site has been approved.

Members of the Policy and Resources Committee (P&R) submitted the application in May for demolition on the site.

The States of Guernsey purchased the brownfield site in July 2025 for £4.5m with a view to regenerating the area.

The demolition proposal, approved on 10 June, included plans to take down a section of road frontage buildings along The Bridge and Commercial Road, install fencing to south of the site on Commercial Road and install a fence and create gated vehicle entrance to part of the site to the east. It also included relocating the bus shelter at New Road junction.

In a letter to the States of Guernsey Planning Service in May, the St Sampson's Parish Douzaine said measures undertaken to prioritise redevelopment of the site were welcomed but raised concerns about a road safety and traffic management.

It said: "In summary, St Sampson Douzaine is supportive of the proposed initial measures to aid the much overdue redevelopment of Leale's Yard subject to the important road safety and traffic management concerns highlighted above."

In January, President of Policy and Resources Committee Lindsay de Sausmarez declared the site would be clear before the end of 2026.

"The benefits will extend across the wider Braye du Valle, unlocking private investment, creating new spaces for business and the community, generating jobs and helping to bring more social and economic vibrancy back to this important part of the island," de Sausmarez previously said.
