WeRoam aims to encourage residents to be active and explore their local areas

A new app that rewards people with points and prizes for being active is launching across Kent.

WeRoam is designed to make walking, wheeling and cycling "more fun, more social and more rewarding for everyone," said Kent County Council (KCC).

The local authority said the app linked to smartwatches and fitness trackers to automatically record walks, bike rides and wheelchair journeys, while activities can also be logged manually.

Spencer Dixon, deputy cabinet member for highways and transport, said WeRoam was about making active travel "feel genuinely rewarding".

"We want people across Kent to open the app, step outside and discover that their everyday journeys, however big or small are worth something," he added.

KCC said the app also aimed to encourage residents to explore their local areas, with certain landmarks and trails labelled with a "roam marker".

When users discover a roam marker, they collect points which can be redeemed at various businesses in the county.

'Challenges and activities'

Matt Thacker, who has been a sports coach for more than 20 years, said the use of fitness apps had gained immense popularity since covid.

"Apps work for some people because they get a sense of fulfilment from completing different challenges and activities," he says.

"However, we need to remember everyone has different goals and may require personalised and varied exercise routines, no two bodies are alike."

Thacker, who lives in Kent, said people were motivated in different ways.

"Since WeRoam has a rewards system, I think it could encourage users to be more proactive in exercising," he said.

"However, some people prefer having someone present to inspire and guide them because they find that interaction beneficial."

WeRoam is a joint project by KCC and Active AI Ltd.
