A four-year-old girl has died in hospital after being hit by a car in Nottinghamshire.

Emergency services were called to Nottingham Road, in the village of Gotham, at 14:28 BST on Sunday, Nottinghamshire Police said.

The girl died a short time later in hospital, the force added.

A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been bailed.

Police said the girl was hit on a stretch of road near the junction with Meadow End.

Officers from the force's serious collision investigation unit are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage to come forward.

Sgt Paul Clark said: "This is a deeply tragic incident and our thoughts are with the young girl's loved ones at this unimaginably difficult time.

"The circumstances are being investigated and we would ask people not to speculate on social media.

"I would also ask the privacy of the family is respected as they come to terms with what has happened."
