Multiple crews tackle two house fires

Fire crews tackled two blazes, including a large house fire where flames ripped through the roof and spread to a neighbouring property.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said there were multiple 999 calls about a fire in Greenbank Road, near Mutley Plain, Plymouth, at 04:43 BST.

Crews from Greenbank, Plympton, Crownhill, Modbury, Plymstock and Totnes were all in attendance and there were no casualties but nearby homes were evacuated.

The fire service said structural work needed to be carried out before a full examination of the scene can be conducted to understand the cause of the fire - crews were also called out to a fire in St Budeaux.

Greenbank Road was closed in both directions between Mutley Plain and the Aldi store whilst they tackled the fire.

Crews also tackled a house fire in a first floor bedroom at a home on Estuary Way in St Budeaux after a call-out at 04:36 BST.

Four people had evacuated before crews from Camels Head, Crownhill, Greenbank, Buckfastleigh, and Tavistock fire stations attended and one person was assessed by ambulance crews but did not need any further treatment.

The fire service said the cause is thought to have been accidental.

Crews used breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, a safety jet and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called to the Greenbank Road fire along with fire and ambulance at about 05:00.

The force said a number of nearby properties were evacuated, but some residents had been able to return.

It added inquiries into the cause of the fire were ongoing.

"Structural work needs to be carried out before a full examination of the scene can be conducted to understand the cause of the fire," a spokesperson said.
