Warning as 470 unsafe toys are seized from traders

Parents have been warned against buying unsafe non-compliant toys after 470 were seized by Trading Standards.

North Northamptonshire Council said "serious safety concerns" had been raised about popular squishy dumplings being sold at car boot sales and out the back of vehicles.

Some of the products it confiscated across the region in July emitted a strong chemical odour and contained substances that were harmful to children.

Martin Griffiths, the Reform UK council's leader, added it was "so important" that youngsters were safe while playing.

A council spokesman said legitimate toys would have a batch, serial or product reference number and the manufacturer's name and address.

Dumpling squishies have become one of the internet's most popular trends, bringing together fidget toys and the mystery of unboxing something unknown.

They can be squashed, stretched, pinched or rolled, and are used for stress relief and focus.

Kirk Harrison, the council's executive member for regulatory services, urged parents to be vigilant when purchasing them.
