A section of the Weaver line on the London Overground could remain suspended for several days after a major fire damaged houses near the tracks, Network Rail has said.

On Sunday, around 125 firefighters responded to the fire on the rail embankment in Walthamstow, east London, which caused extensive damage to several homes and the track.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, one line-side property was severely damaged by the fire and needs to be made safe before trains can run again between Walthamstow and Wood Street station."

Transport for London's status update states that no Weaver line services are due to run between Hackney Downs and Chingford until Thursday.

Several households had to be evacuated on Sunday evening. While most were able to return, those whose homes were too badly damaged have been offered temporary accommodation, Waltham Forest Council said.

Network Rail said the fire caused "extensive damage" to several properties

In a separate incident, a fire next to the track in Stratford, east London on Friday that damaged signalling equipment is continuing to cause disruption to Greater Anglia rail services.

A Network Rail incident update said its engineers were "working as quickly as possible to repair the damaged infrastructure" and a reduced number of Greater Anglia train services were running via Stratford which could be busier than usual.
