MP warning after 'men pretend to be from her team'

An MP has warned residents after hearing "deeply concerning reports" three men pretended to be from her team and tried to enter a person's home.

Labour MP for Redcar Anna Turley said she was told the men repeatedly visited a resident and asked to enter to use their toilet.

In a post on social media, she said: "These individuals are not from my office. My staff and volunteers would never ask to enter your property, and my office would not be knocking on doors at 7pm in the evening."

Cleveland Police said it was investigating and advised people with unexpected visitors to "check their identification and if there is any doubt at all, to decline entry".

On Monday morning, Turley said: "I have received deeply concerning reports of three men repeatedly visiting a resident's home in the evening, claiming to be from my office and asking to enter the property to use the toilet."

She said if anyone came to the door making similar claims to not let them inside, inform the police and also tell her office.

"Please share this warning, particularly with anyone who lives alone or may be vulnerable," she posted.

Redcar and East Cleveland Neighbourhoods Insp Neil Deluce said he was in contact with Turley's team.

"If people feel under pressure from unexpected callers they should close and lock the door and if they feel unsafe or believe there is an actual threat, call Cleveland Police on the 101 number," Deluce said.

He also asked anyone who may have also been visited by the three men claiming to be from Turley's office to get in touch.
