Cartgate (In), 455 yards, par four
A straight par four with the Sutherland bunker at 260 yards only coming into play if the breeze is in your face. It's only small but a bit of a ball magnet. The fairway narrows up at driving distance with humps and hollows left and right. The second is played to a double green, shared with the third, which runs away from you and tends to kick the ball to the right. Judging your distance with your second shot is not easy as the ball tends to run to the back of the green. Initially, it looks quite an easy hole but it's a fairly narrow tee shot and once again problematic to get close with the second. Cottage bunker: Refers to Pilmour Cottage, which is now Pilmour House and the Eden Clubhouse. Sutherland bunker: In 1869 a tiny bunker at about 260 yards behind the much bigger Cottage bunker was filled in but three days later it reappeared. The golfer thought to be responsible for restoring it, AG Sutherland, later found to be incorrect, had it named after him.
