Dyke, 453 yards, par four
The second was extended by 40 yards for the 2005 Open. The fairway is completely unsighted - you hit over the edge of the gorse and take a line on a TV tower or the edge of the hotel. The further right you can keep it the better, but not too far or you'll flirt with the gorse. Up the left is a big bunker called Cheape's. If you get stuck in there, it's difficult to make the green in two. With the wind behind it's not impossible to drive the green, otherwise it's a three-wood and an eight iron. It's an awkward second shot to get it close because the ball lands on a little downslope, which tends to kick the ball to the right of the pin. Overall it's one of the middle difficulty holes. Cheape's bunker: Sir James Cheape saved the course from the rabbit farmers in 1821 by buying the links. His descendant, also called James, sold the links to the Royal & Ancient in 1892 who then sold it to the town a year later.
