High (in), 174 yards, par three
The second par three and the shortest hole on the course. The pin is only ever in one of two spots - three times it will be on the front of the green tucked tight behind the Strath bunker, possibly the deepest on the course. You can feed the ball in from the left or pitch it past and let it roll back towards the hole. But it's a very tricky shot because no matter where the breeze is, a slight misjudgement will put the ball in this deep pot, and there are positions in there from which it is almost physically impossible to get it out. If you don't the ball can end up back in your own footprints and then the trouble really starts. Though short, the hole can play anything from a nine iron to a five iron depending on the wind. High (In): Shares its name with the seventh, which crosses it, for a similarly lofty position. Strath bunker: A small deep pot on the front edge of the green. Named after one of St Andrews' most famous families. Andrew was a former Open champion in the 19th century but the bunker is probably named after brother Davie, friend and golfing partner of Young Tom Morris.
