Burn, 376 yards, par four
A shortish par four played from right in front of the Royal and Ancient clubhouse. Always a slightly unnerving tee shot, even for experienced golfers, despite the widest fairway in golf at about 130 yards. The perfect driving line is just right of the Swilcan Bridge, which is left-centre of the fairway. The key to the hole is where the pin is cut in relation to the Swilcan Burn, the little stream running across the front of the green. Hitting the fairway does not always give the best angle into the flag. If it's at the front you want to drive further to the left so you've got more space coming over the angle of the burn. The green has a few undulations but is never easy to read. If the wind is in your face and the flag is at the front, you've got to be careful you don't spin it back into the burn. It's a fairly soft opening hole but is always a bit wind dependent. It's not easy to make three but relatively easy to make four if you're not too nervous. Burn: The hole is named after the Swilcan Burn which meanders across the fairway and guards the green.
